Spruce Hill Farm Barn Fire
Statement issued by Crystal Stover,
on behalf of Amy and Dana Sterling, Spruce Hill Farm

As most of you have heard there was a devastating fire at Spruce Hill Farm (Amy and Dana Sterling's) in Windham today. The fire was found at 4:30 am as Amy and Alicha started their feeding routine. They found the barn filled with smoke and called 911. They lost 8 horses as well as all tack, equipment and the barn. The Windham fire chief and Rachel Flaherty of Maine Equine Associates confirmed that the horses did not suffer as they had fallen asleep from smoke inhalation. There were 5 horses in a detatched barn that were unharmed.

The beloved horses that were lost today are:

Lil' of Buckskin (Monty) owned by Elizabeth Cole
The Whole Nine Yards (Ripley) owned by Taylor Duncanson
The Moxie Man (Lucky) owned by Brittany and Jenna Costa
A Romantic Cowboy (Cowboy) owned by Julia Jordan and Abigail Smith
The Scottish Verse (Scotty) owned by Haley Jordan
MWS Flash Mea Double (Sandy) owned by Marti Beaulieu
Zipped Outta Town (Doc) owned by Caitlin Sarah Putnam
Ayesgarth Zeus (Zeus) owned by Amy & Dana Sterling

Through this difficult time Amy and Dana want to thank everyone for their help and support. Special thanks goes out to the firemen, Rachel Flaherty of Maine Equine Assoc, Troy Pride, Longhorn Pet Supply, Blue Seal Feeds and friends, family and neighbors.

The horses were not only show horses; they were family and will be greatly missed. They won't be remembered for their show records but for the smiles they brought to everyone's faces. No one ever thinks that anything like this will happen to them. It is an utter tragedy. As all of you know these horses were very well loved and taken care of. Sometimes there are no answers as to "why this happens to good people". We will be having a "Celebration of Their Lives" on Sunday Dec 14th at 1pm for anyone that would like to join us. Bring pictures to add to our memory boards and any of your fond memories to share. The celebration will be at

Crystal Stover's
508 Gray Road
Windham ME 04062.

Donations for the Spruce Hill Farm Fund can be sent in care of Crystal Stover at the address above. Amy and the horse owners have lost all their tack and equipment from everyday manure forks and lead ropes to blankets and show saddles so any amount would be gratefully appreciated.

A Letter From Amy Sterling
Spruce Hill Farm cannot express into words how thankful we are for our family and friends. They have not left our sides. They have been here in the wee hours of the morning until late at night and all the hours in between. The hardest part is when you are alone (it gives you way too much time to think) and thankfully that hasn't been too often. THANK YOU, THANK YOU! It doesn't seem enough to say or write those words.

We have had some incredible donations; halters, leads, grain, hay and shavings all the way to the loan of a John Deere Gator. (Thank You: Sue Hershey-Mac Mountain Tack Repair, Sawtelle Family Farms, Riding To The Top, Lisa Sweatt, The Allen Family, The Slaving Family, The Smith Family, The O'Brien family, The Fernalds, Chase Excavating, Corsetti's Variety, Longhorn Horse Supply, Windham Blue Seal & Hammond Tractor supply) There are so many, many more people who have been here. Some I didn't even know. For those of you I didn't mention it is not because I don't love you, I'm simply still numb and can't sort it all out yet. Not only does everyone come with something in their hands but with also comforting words and a shoulder to cry on. Every hour someone walks into my house with a bit of good news. Today we found out that Keeleys banquet center is donating a room for a fundraising dance with Motor Booty Affair on Jan. 9th (Thank you Kevin Smith and family).

My "hay guy", Steve O'brien has been watching over me all day. He started his day with contacting Hammond Tractor for the gator and came back several hours later to say he had been meeting with local Windham contractors. He found many who are willing to donate their time & skills for an old fashioned barn raising. My husband is "in the business". I know how slow some of these guys are right now and how money is tight. For them to donate their time to us just is the most unselfish act I can think of.

Crystal Stover has been organizing donations and other fundraisers. She also is organizing our Celebration of Life ceremony on Sunday 14th. I couldn't have done any of that. Her daughter Amber has been sleeping over and pretty much not leaving Alicha's side. The friendships these girls have all made due to their one common passion...horses, is incredible to say the least.

Liberty Strickland took over the care of my remaining 5 horses on the day of the fire. Returning the next day with more hay and supplies (Thank you to Sawtelle Family Farms). I think she just knew I was incapable of gathering all the stuff I would need, and she was right.

Yesterday, there were more times than not that I said "this is it", "I give up". Today, things DO look brighter because of ALL of you. For all the emails, and Facebook mentions....I've read them all. Each and every one. I can't respond to them all because there have been over 100. I'm so thankful for all the love and support, as are each and everyone of the families from Spruce Hill. Keep us in your prayers because we can feel them.
